Discover Monarch Butterflies

The story of the monarch butterfly is one of incredible transformation and epic travel. We are also part of this adventure, and each of us can play a key role in the survival of the monarch. Believe it or not, it can be as simple as planting a milkweed seed.

Create your own monarch-friendly garden using our coupons for local nurseries.

“We can each protect monarchs by helping to restore their habitat! Even a pot of native milkweed on your patio can make a difference.”

“Watch our three-part video series to learn about the monarch’s unique lifecycle and its dangerous journey south.”

Monarch vs. Viceroy: How to Tell Them Apart

ViceroyMonarch-1024x332

It’s easy to mistake a viceroy for a monarch—but look closer and you’ll notice key differences. Both butterflies share the same orange-and-black coloring, but:

  • Size: Monarchs are larger, with wingspans of about 3.5–4 inches, while viceroys average 2.5–3.5 inches.

  • Markings: The easiest way to tell them apart is the black line across the hind wings—present on the viceroy but absent on the monarch.

  • Behavior: Monarchs are famous long-distance migrants, while viceroys stay closer to home.

Both play an important role in Indiana Dunes ecosystems, and spotting either is a treat.
