The Indiana Dunes Arts + Culture Trail invites you beyond the dunes to discover the museums, galleries, theaters, and historic places that bring our communities to life. Along the way, use the Indiana Dunes Tourism app to check in and collect original postcards from each location.

At the Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes State Park, you can climb towering dunes for views of Lake Michigan, wander beneath colorful fall canopies, follow boardwalks through wetlands, or slow down and spend time relaxing on the beach. The summer crowds are gone, as are the hotter temperatures!

Once you've become inspired by the gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellows you find on the trails, you can start exploring colorful works of art, local history, live performances, and the creative people who help tell the story of the Indiana Dunes.
The Indiana Dunes Arts + Culture Trail is a free, self-guided experience connecting 14 cultural stops throughout Porter County. Spend the afternoon wandering through an art gallery, tour a historic building, discover a local museum, or make an evening of it with a live performance. There's no need to do everything at once. Just choose the stops that catch your eye and make the trail a part of your Indiana Dunes weekend.
The best part? You'll receive a little something to remember each stop by. As you explore, you can collect Sand + Steel-themed postcards featuring artwork selected by each location. Start a collection on your first trip, add to it throughout your weekend, or save a few stops as a reason to visit again!
Find Art and Creativity Around Every Corner
You don't have to travel far from the shore to find a thriving creative community in the Indiana Dunes area. Throughout Northwest Indiana, museums, galleries, and creative spaces that show work from local and regional artists.
At the Art Barn School of Art, creativity happens in a country setting. Exhibits, classes, and events connect visitors with local artists in a historic barn. In downtown Chesterton, the Chesterton Art Center offers rotating exhibits, classes, and events. The Pines Village Retirement Communities has a nonprofit gallery that features creators from Chicago to beyond.
Head south into Valparaiso and you'll find a creative community and exhibits at the Valparaiso Creative Council and Valparaiso University's Brauer Museum of Art.

When the sun sets, your Arts + Culture adventure doesn't have to end. Head to the historic Memorial Opera House, which has been entertaining audiences for generations, or, if a more intimate theatre experience is more your vibe, grab tickets to a show at Chicago Street Theatre or 4th Street Theater. Check performance schedules before your stay to see what's on the stage.
Discover the Stories Behind the Dunes
The landscapes of the Indiana Dunes are only part of the story here on the shores of Lake Michigan. The Arts + Culture Trail invites you to experience the places, people, and moments that shaped the communities here.
Explore local history at the Porter County Museum, Duneland History Center, and The Hour Glass Museum, or step into the past at the Stagecoach Inn & Panhandle Depot. At the Beverly Shores Depot and Gallery, you can experience both art and history. The Beverly Shores Depot and Panhandle Depot are must-stops for railfans!
Start Your Postcard Collection
Here's where your Indiana Dunes weekend becomes worth writing home about. At each of the locations on the Indiana Dunes Arts + Culture Trail, you'll be able to collect a Sand + Steel-themed postcard featuring artwork chosen by the artists, actors, and museum curators of the region.
Collecting them is easy and free. Just download the Indiana Dunes Tourism app and check in at each location. There are 14 postcards to collect, including the one available at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center. Pick up a few during your fall getaway, seek out your favorite designs, or make it a personal mission to collect them all! You can put them in a scrapbook, frame them, or send them home and write about your Indiana Dunes adventure!
