When the temperatures drop, and the snow begins to fall, sometimes the best thing to do is to head indoors. From art galleries and bookstores to live theater performances and cozy drinks, read on to learn about the best things to do indoors this winter!
Wander Through Museums & Galleries
Learn about the rich history of the Indiana Dunes at the Porter County Museum. This museum in Valparaiso dates back to the 1930s and showcases artifacts, art, and photographs from the area’s earliest settlers. Entrance to the museum is free and they offer guided tours every Saturday.
Got an eye for art? Then head to the Chesterton Art Center, where you can observe art made by talented artists from the local area and beyond! The Center also sells hand-crafted gifts made by Indiana artists and offers classes and workshops to help you enrich your art skills. Drop in on one of their life drawing classes or learn the basics of pottery!
Browse a Bookstore
There is nothing like browsing through rows of books on a chilly winter day. The Press is a fun and welcoming independent bookstore located in Downtown Valparaiso. The space also functions as a coffee shop, serving locally roasted coffee. Pro Tip: Stop by their wine bar on Thursdays and Fridays to unwind with a glass of red or white alongside your evening read.
If you're looking for a more old-timey vibe, O'Gara & Wilson Ltd, Booksellers recently moved to Chesterton’s Historic Downtown. This “antiquarian” bookstore sells an elite selection of used and rare books, maps, and other collectibles.
Watch a Live Show
When night begins to fall, there are still plenty of events to attend in the Indiana Dunes. Catch an exhilarating show at the historic Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso. Founded in 1893, this venue hosts a selection of classic Broadway plays and unique musical acts all year. Likewise, you can watch talented actors light up the stage at the Chicago Street Theatre in Chesterton.
But wait, there's more! The 4th Street Theater (also in Chesterton) is an all-volunteer-run community theater group that holds multiple productions a year. Stay tuned to their calendar to see what’s on.
Relax at a Cozy Coffee Shop
Take it easy on those cold winter days with a relaxing cup of coffee or tea. At Fluid Coffee Roasters, you can sip on a cup of locally roasted coffee while admiring the works of local artists that adorn the walls. In addition, all the syrups and flavors are made from scratch. This shop has convenient locations in Valparaiso and Chesterton.
Hungry for something more substantial? Grab a bite at Third Coast Spice Cafe, where owners David and Lisa Wodrich serve delectable breakfasts and lunches catering to various dietary needs. Cozy up with their Cinnamon Toast Latte, or tuck into their BYO Buffalo Burger — a house favorite!
