Tips for Hiking on Dunes
Hiking on sand can be deceptively tougher than standard trails, but it adds an extra layer of excitement to the challenge. Here’s what to expect:
- Deep Sand: Much of the trail is composed of loose and coarse sand that can slow your progress. For each step forward, you might slide back. Don’t rush things, and embrace the terrain!
- Paths and Stairs: The two smaller dunes have steep, sandy paths, while Mt. Tom has a handy staircase that makes for a slightly easier ascent—especially if you’re on a hike with little ones.
- Leg Workout: Climbing sand dunes is a serious leg workout. Take it slow and steady, or jog for an intense challenge. In fact, running or walking on sand is 1.6x more difficult than on solid ground!
- Plan for Weather: Hot days at the dunes can amplify the difficulty, so early mornings or cooler months are always ideal for taking on the challenge.
- Stay on the Trail: Remain on the marked trail to avoid brushing up against poison ivy, limit exposure to ticks, protect sensitive habitats, and prevent erosion.
What to Do, Bring & Wear
Preparation is key to a safe and enjoyable hike at the Indiana Dunes:
- What to Bring: Plenty of water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and snacks.
- Stay Safe: Stick to marked trails to avoid poison ivy and protect the fragile dune ecosystem.
- Dog-Friendly: Dogs are welcome throughout the State Park but must be kept on a leash at all times. Be sure to bring water for your pup and waste bags to help keep the park clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Take your time and enjoy the journey—most hikers complete the loop in 45-75 minutes, but there’s no right or wrong way to do it, as long as you have a great time! After the hike, stop by the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center to pick up your free 3 Dune Challenge sticker or purchase a commemorative t-shirt, hoodie, or other merch from the Beaches & Beyond Gift Shop.
