When the weather doesn't cooperate near Lake Michigan, the Indiana Dunes region offers plenty of ways to explore, learn, and relax indoors. With a variety of museums and cultural experiences, nature centers, and local shops, the Dunes promise fun, discovery, and a welcome break from the cold and rain.
Explore Local Museums & History

The Dunes area offers a variety of indoor attractions that bring the region’s history and culture to life. The Hour Glass House Museum, home to the Historical Society of the Ogden Dunes, features exhibitions on the history of the Dunes as well as special events; visits are available by appointment.
The Porter County Museum in Valparaiso presents a permanent collection alongside rotating exhibitions focused on local heritage. Its partnership site, the Stage Coach Inn & Panhandle Depot, now offers weekly public hours.
Fine Arts and Galleries

For art lovers, the Brauer Museum of Art houses more than 5,000 works dating from the 19th century to today. The Beverly Shores Museum and Art Gallery (located at the historic train station known as “The Depot”) pairs town history with rotating exhibitions by regional artists.
For hands-on creativity, explore workshops and classes at the Art Barn School of Art, the Chesterton Art Center, and The Hub NWI.
Indoor Nature and Education Centers

When trails aren’t ideal, you can still connect with the Dunes’ natural environment and wildlife indoors. The Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education features interactive exhibits focused on wetlands, wildlife, and conservation, along with ranger-led programs and talks throughout the year.
The Indiana Dunes State Park Nature Center and the Dunes Learning Center also host workshops, lectures, and seasonal programs for curious kids and adults alike. The Dunes Learning Center primarily serves as a kids' camp, so be sure to check our events calendar for workshop dates!
Live Entertainment & Cinema

The Memorial Opera House is a cultural hub listed on the National Register of Historic Places, hosting concerts, live theatre, classes , and workshops under one storied roof.
For a nostalgic movie night, head to The Port Drive-In. If you prefer power recliners and modern comforts, catch a film at Emagine Portage and enjoy the big screen in style.
Shops & Local Cafés

Rainy days are perfect for browsing local shops. Downtown Chesterton and Valparaiso offer boutiques, bookstores, antique shops, and gift stores that highlight local makers and regional flavor. Stop by The Market on 12, Over Yonder! Dunes Gift Shop, or the Beaches & Beyond Gift Shop for boutique artisan-made gifts and souvenirs. And don't miss the historic Schoolhouse Shop for clothing and accessories!
While you’re out, warm up with a hot drink at one of the area’s many cafés or restaurants. Enjoy a cozy meal at Cherries & Berries Pancake House, or have an elevated coffee experience at Dagger Mountain Roastery.
At the Indiana Dunes, there’s always something to discover–rain or shine. For more ideas, explore attractions, browse upcoming events, and start planning your weather-proof itinerary.
