Kankakee Sands Efroymsom Family Prairie Restoration

Kankakee conserves more than 8,000 acres of prairie, savanna, and wetlands—habitat for many declining and endangered bird species. They have a bison herd of nearly one hundred animals that help to manage the prairie through their grazing action. Hike two miles of black oak savanna brimming with wildflowers to the once-booming town of Conrad, now no more than a ghost town with crumbling foundations.
