Kankakee Sands Efroymsom Family Prairie Restoration

The more than 8000 acres at Kankakee Sands provide refuge for some of the fastest declining bird species in America. Hike two miles of black oak savanna brimming with wildflowers to the once-booming town of Conrad, now no more than a ghost town with crumbling foundations. While you’re visiting, try to spot the glass lizard, a legless reptile resembling a snake with ear holes and eyelids, and the herd of bison at their overlook area.
