Kankakee Sands
Kankakee Sands conserves more than 8,000 acres of prairie, savanna, and wetlands—habitat for such declining bird species as the northern bobwhite quail, grasshopper sparrow, and the American bittern, and endangered species like the Henslow’s sparrow. Kankakee Sands has a bison herd of nearly 100 animals that help to manage the prairie through their grazing action.
