Fall and winter show Indiana Dunes in a whole new light

Autumn is the perfect season for a nature escape to see the fall leaves.

I recently got out and enjoyed a long hike at Indiana Dunes State Park in Chesterton.

I have two favorite trails at Dunes State Park. The 3 Dune Challenge Trail involves climbing the three highest sand dunes, but the views are amazing. I also like trail 9 because it starts in the woods before making its way to wonderful views of Lake Michigan.Dunes fall

On my recent hike, the leaves of orange, yellow and red were at their peak, which means the colors should be around into November.

There are also two great autumn drives for those who would rather enjoy a leisurely drive and stop for a great meal or some wine tasting.

The Dunes and Lake loop takes you along Lake Michigan, while the Downtowns and Country Roads Loop features the charming downtowns of Valparaiso and Chesterton.

If you want to make a weekend of it, I’d recommend staying at one of the chain hotels in Indiana Dunes Country or a unique, local inn like DunesWalk Inn in Chesterton. Get the rundown here.
