This gem of a wildlife area conserves 8,062 acres of wetland, upland, and woodland habitat, providing an ideal stopover for migratory birds. Beginning in August, sandhill cranes, Canada geese, ducks, and occasionally even federally endangered whooping cranes gather here. By mid-November—peak fall viewing time—daily crane counts swell to 15,000 or more. They congregate in early spring, but in less spectacular numbers. The Marsh Observation Trail (2 miles one way) follows a gated road into the Waterfowl Resting Area and ends at a viewing platform near open water. Visitors are required to check-in at the headquarters office. Limited amenities. Call (219) 843-4841 for hunting information.
