Drive-ins And Classic Cars
Looking for fun from a time when hula hoops and poodle skirts were king?
Indiana Dunes Country is your kind of place, with a drive-in theater, a drive-in restaurant and plenty of car cruise-ins and scenic drives.
Fuel up for your adventure with a chili dog and root beer from Port Drive-In Restaurant in Chesterton for lunch or dinner, or try one of these popular diners for breakfast or lunch:
- Peggy Sue’s or Northside Diner in Chesterton,
- Schoop’s Hamburgers in Portage
- Schoop’s in Valparaiso (Both Schoop’s locations are also open for dinner).
Then enjoy a scenic car cruise from our car page, with the Dunes Shoreline Loop taking you along Lake Michigan’s southern shoreline. While there, enjoy the view from Lake View Picnic Area or walk down to the beach for a stroll. Our car page also has a list of cruise-ins and car events.
Why not enjoy some bowling at Seven Peaks Bowling and Fun Center in Chesterton or Inman’s Bowling and Recreation in Valparaiso? Or, if you’re here on a weekend, roller skate at R-Way Skate Center in Portage.
The highlight of the experience will be catching a new release double feature at the 49er Drive-In Theatre in Valparaiso, one of only about 350 drive-ins left in the country, down from the 4,000 or so that existed during the drive-in heyday of the late 1950s. Extend your stay a retro motel, like Blackhawk Motel or Al and Sally’s Motel, both located a few miles from the Indiana Dunes.
