Art and History Itinerary

No trip to Indiana Dunes Country is complete without a stop in the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center, where you can pick up information about the area, chat with rangers of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and get introduced to the wonders of the national park by watching two informational videos. Be sure to ask for your free souvenir postcards.

If your trip is on a Saturday, start your day at Chesterton’s European Market, where local artisans, chefs and musicians showcase their fine goods. You can spend the entire morning enjoying the market and downtown Chesterton, or just enjoy all the many art shops in Chesterton if your trip is not on a Saturday.

Valparaiso University’s Chapel of the Resurrection and Brauer Art Museum are both located on the beautiful campus. Take a guided tour through the country’s largest collegiate chapel and be dazzled by the 94-foot high Mundeloh stained glass windows and the freestanding Brandt Campanile that houses 12 bronze bells. Then head to Brauer for the latest exhibits featuring both internationally renowned and local artists.

While in Valparaiso, take a tour of the Memorial Opera House, built in 1893 and a living memorial to the country’s Civil War veterans. It has played host to performers from John Philips Sousa to the Marx Brothers. Take in one of their many performances held throughout the year.

The most delicious tour in town is found at Valpo Velvet Ice Cream Shoppe, where the Brown family has been producing delicious ice cream for three generations. They also have incredible food.

Also in Valparaiso are the Porter County Museum of History and Fire Museum, which feature historic items of both local and national importance.

Throughout Porter County you can find places to take home a piece of history in the numerous antique shops, each with their own unique finds.

Dine in a restaurant that is both named after and in honor of the Industrial Revolution, and features large statues of industry and a miniature train that runs throughout the dining area.
