Autumn in Indiana Dunes Country

When Mother Nature paints our landscape with brilliant reds, oranges and yellows, Indiana Dunes Country activities also become bright and colorful. Take bird watching, for example. During the fall migration of southbound birds, a huge variety of bird species are funneled into the Indiana Dunes as they follow the shore of Lake Michigan. You might see a Cormorant, Herons, Sandpipers, Cuckoos, Swallows, Woodpeckers, Warblers, Finches or more as you cast your scopes skyward and along the shoreline.

Follow the yellow brick road to the Wizard of Oz Festival in Downtown Chesterton—the largest and second oldest Wizard of Oz Festival in the U.S. The festival transforms the town into the Land of Oz and celebrates with a parade, contests, Brunch with the Munchkins and more.

Enjoy the colors, flavors, sounds and friendly atmosphere of autumn at the Dunes Heritage Days at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. Demonstrations and traditional crafts, music and food celebrate the area’s heritage and culture. See what the local farmers and artisans have to offer—you might get a head start on your holiday shopping.
