Phone: (219) 395-1882
Dune Succession Trail in the West Beach area of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore offers a mile-long look at the stages of dune development, starting with a beach on the shore of Lake Michigan and ending with a boardwalk through a forest that has risen from the sand. See amazing dunes and interdunal ponds close up as you traverse a mile along the boardwalks. The 250 stairs will certainly provide a challenging hike with one of the best views in all the dunes area. Once you're at the top, take in expansive views of Lake Michigan and the distant Chicago skyline. As the name suggests, this trail is a great place to see ecological dune succession at work. Numbered posts along the trail are part of a self-guided interpretive trail. The Dunes Succession Trail links with two others in the national park system, covering a total of 3.6 miles.
