Sunset Hike in Costume at Kankakee Sands

Enjoy your Halloween this year at site 53 – the Kankakee Sands Prairie. This Sunday, October 31st, 2010 from 3-6 pm at the Prairie there will be a sunset hike to the hilltop of the Prairie Trail, hayrides through the prairie, and cider and cookies. The Seed Processing Facility will also be open for tours. Costumes are encouraged and bring a ghost story to share if you dare! This event is free and open to the public. The festival will be held at The Nature Conservancy’s Kankakee Sands Seed Barn, located at 417 W 600N Lake Village, IN 46349. RSVPs appreciated, but not necessary: anyberg@tnc.org or 219-866-1706.

If you have the time and want more of a hands-on experience, join the Kankakee Sands staff and friends in seed-cleaning activities at the seed barn. Participants will help sort native wildflower seeds in preparation for prairie planting from 12pm to 3pm Central Time.  The restoration planting for 2010 will sow hundreds of acres of wetlands at Kankakee Sands.  At the seed barn, particpants will prepare seeds for planting time by severing the seed heads and plucking out the precious seeds with the help of hand sieves, the Grim Thresher, the Haunted Hammermill, and the Demented Fanningmill.  Handle the seeds of Mad-Dog Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) if you dare!  Particpants will help catalog and weigh the seed loot and lock it away in cold storage until planting time.  The seed barn is a bit dusty and chilly, please costume yourself accordingly.  Long sleeves are recommended.  Gloves and dust masks will be provided. The Kankakee Sands seed barn is located at 417 W 600 N Lake Village IN 46349. RSVPs or questions to Stephanie Frischie 219-819-0245 or sfrischie@tnc.org.
