Into the Woods: WPL’s Summer Reading Program for Children

Children ages 3 through grade 5 are invited to travel “Into the Woods”, Westchester Public Library’s summer reading program for children.  The program, which begins June 11 and ends July 21, will take place at Thomas Library, located at 200 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton, and Hageman Library, located at 100 Francis St., Porter.  Participants may register at either Thomas or Hageman Library beginning the week of June 4.

When each child registers, he or she will receive a Travel Guide to record the books that are read.  Each week, participants can bring in their reading records to be stamped.

During the reading program, there will be weekly activities offered for enjoyment.  Story Time for children ages 3-6 will be available on Tuesdays at Thomas Library at 1 p.m. and on Wednesday mornings at 10 a.m. at Hageman Library beginning the week of June 11.  Themes will be all kinds of nature subjects, including fishing & lakes, camping & bugs, reptiles & mammals, and more.

Thomas Library Children’s manager Merribeth Paunicka welcomes patrons Into the Woods for WPL’s summer reading program for children. Register at either Thomas or Hageman Library.

Weekly craft programs will take place at both libraries.  Crafts at Twilight will be at Thomas Library on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.  Hageman Library will host Exploring Nature Through Art with Ronnie, also on Tuesdays, from 2-3 p.m.

Thursday Adventures await participants in the reading program this summer.  Each week a new adventure will take place for participants in the program.  On June 21, enjoy a nature hike at the Dorothy Buell Visitor Center at 1 p.m.  At 7 p.m. on June 28, come to Thomas Library for the Stuffed Animal Cookout and Sing Along with Leonardo, complete with smores and lightning bugs.

On July 5, at 1 p.m., come to the Coffee Creek Habitat Hunt.  Learn how to track fairies, and build a Fairy House on July 12, 1 p.m., at Thomas Library. The final Thursday Adventure will be the Bat Hike at Dune Ridge on July 19, at 7 p.m.

The summer reading finale, the Woodland Wee Folk Festival, will take place on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Thomas Centennial Park.  See if you can best the Gnome Obstacle Course, take the Fairy Homes & Garden Tour, eat at the Once Upon a Dine Café, and so much more.
