Get outside & lend a hand: 3 cool “hands-on” opportunties

Volunteers removing invasives

Want to do more than just visit the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore? Take advantage of one (or more) of the following three opportunities to really get involved!

Saturday Feb 5, 2011 9:00am-1:00 pm: The Indiana Coastal Cooperative Weed Management Area team is working with Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to put together an army to battle against invasive plants. Yes, February is a great time to get the jump on a wide variety of uninvited plants trying to take over the park! Members of The Nature Conservancy, Save the Dunes, Shirley Heinz, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and NIPSCO Environmental Action Team are combining talent and time to tackle restoration along the Calumet Trail. The team will be working on national lakeshore parkland, and NIPSCO land to help reduce the ways invasive plants infiltrate the park. We are looking for 50 people who want to come for a winter assault mission. Tools and safetyglasses will be provided, but come dressed to fight the elements and the weeds! Fearless John Kwilosz will lead the team in to battle. Contact him at if you can come.

Interested in citizen science? As some of you know the Field Museum and other organizations seek to use volunteers for butterfly, or frog, or bird or plant or other surveys. These surveys are set up by scientist at various institutions and have a specific protocol to collect the data on their species. Lynda Lancaster from the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore istrying to put together citizens who would like to participate in these surveys and use Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore as their backyard. Most of these surveys require some training and most request that the collected data be submitted online. If you would be interested in participating, please contact Lynda at so she can arrange the training sessions. If there is enough interest she may be able to set up a training session at the park.

Another reminder, the deadline to volunteer for Maple Sugar Time is coming fast! is still looking for volunteers to help in all areas of this sweet program!
