Get out and enjoy September with these activities!

Henslow's Sparrow_Newton Co_IN by J HertzSeptember is my favorite month for hiking and other outdoor activities, and there are plenty of events from the Indiana Dunes all the way south to The Nature Conservancy’s property.

First, check outIndiana Dunes State Park’s website or calendar for such fun events as the Friday evening (Sept. 13) Dunes Candlelight Walk with ghost stories, the Sunday morning (Sept. 15) fall birding hike, or the Saturday morning (Sept. 21) early fall color hike. More details can also be learned by calling 219-926-1390.

And, on Saturday, Sept. 14, there are two unique opportunities to explore The Nature Conservancy’s property in Illinois and Indiana.

From 9 am to noon, volunteers are invited to join Nature Conservancy staff for native plant seed harvesting and drying at Kankakee Sands Prairie Restoration in Newton County, Indiana.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., people are invited to hike black oak, sand savannas with Nature Conservancy staff at Pembroke Savanna in Kankakee County, Illinois.

Stay for as little or as long as you’d like at each Nature Conservancy event.  Contact Alyssa Nyberg at 219-866-1706 or anyberg@tnc.org for more information.
